Care needed when dealing with internet-based estate agents - 06/02/2006

There are about 200 internet property retailers in the UK, but many claim not to do 'estate agency' work. This means they are outside of the controls of the Estate Agents Act 1979 and in particular, they exploit the exemption to charge clients for merely 'publishing adverts or disseminating information'. This could mean you end up paying for two sets of fees, one to the internet retailer and the other to a traditional estate agent so always be cautious when dealing with such 'internet only' agents.
